Surge Protector Device & Lightning Arrestor

Electrical surges can happen without warning. A nearby lightning strike, switching of large electrical equipment, problems with the electrical supply or other electrical disturbances can cause a sudden increase in voltage. Although a surge may only last for a very short time, it can damage sensitive electronic components inside your home or business. Modern electrical equipment such as televisions, computers, air conditioners, CCTV systems, LED lighting, networking equipment and autogate control boards all contain electronic components that can be affected by voltage surges. Installing a Surge Protective Device (SPD) in your electrical distribution board (DB box) provides an additional layer of protection by limiting transient overvoltage and diverting surge energy through the appropriate earthing path.

What Is a Surge Protective Device (SPD)?

SPD stands for Surge Protective Device. It is designed to protect an electrical installation and connected equipment from sudden voltage surges. Under normal conditions, the SPD does not interfere with the normal operation of your electrical supply. When a transient voltage surge occurs, the SPD responds and provides a path for the excessive surge energy to be discharged through the earthing system, helping to reduce the voltage that reaches the equipment connected to the electrical circuit. An SPD is different from an MCB or RCCB because each device has a different function. An MCB protects the circuit from overload and short circuit, while an RCCB provides protection against earth leakage. The SPD is used specifically to help reduce the effect of transient voltage surges. These devices can work together as part of the overall protection arrangement inside the DB box.

SPD Installation in Your DB Box

The electrical distribution board is an important location for surge protection because it distributes power to different circuits throughout the property. An SPD can be installed in or near the DB depending on the electrical installation and the type of SPD being used. However, simply installing an SPD does not automatically mean the electrical system is properly protected. The connection between the SPD, electrical supply and earthing system is important, and the wiring should be installed correctly with suitable protection and connection arrangements. The existing DB should also be checked before installation. An electrician may need to inspect the main switch, RCCB, MCBs, existing wiring, available space inside the DB, earthing arrangement and general condition of the distribution board. If the DB is old, damaged, overcrowded or has loose or overheated connections, these problems should be settled instead of simply adding an SPD to the existing installation.

Why Earthing Is Important for SPD

An SPD works together with the electrical earthing system. When a surge occurs, the device needs an appropriate path to divert the surge energy away from the protected electrical circuits. This is why the condition of the earthing system and the SPD connection are important. Poor connections, unsuitable wiring or problems with the earthing system can affect how effectively the protection operates. For this reason, SPD installation should not be treated as simply adding one device into the DB. The electrician should look at the complete arrangement and make sure the SPD is suitable for the electrical system. If there are concerns about the existing earthing, the earthing system can also be inspected and tested where required.

Protecting Your Autogate From Electrical Surges

An autogate is another system that can be affected by electrical surges, particularly because the control panel contains electronic components. Depending on the type of autogate, the system may include a auto gate control board, DC 12V transformer or power supply, auto gate 330mhz or 433 mhz receiver, auto gate battery, photocell, limit controls and other electronic components. The auto gate arm or motor may be mechanically sound, but a surge can potentially damage the electronic control board and cause the auto gate to stop working. A common situation is when an autogate is working normally and then stops responding after a thunderstorm. Sometimes the remote control no longer operates the gate, the control panel has no response, or the board has visible damage. This does not always mean lightning caused the failure, because electrical faults, component failure and wiring problems can have similar symptoms. However, if an autogate has experienced repeated electronic failures after thunderstorms, it is worth checking the electrical supply and surge protection arrangement rather than simply replacing the control board every time.

SPD Protection for Autogate Systems

Protecting an autogate should be considered as part of the property’s overall electrical protection rather than simply putting a surge protector beside the gate motor. The electrical supply to the autogate, the DB, wiring, earthing and existing protection should be checked together. If the property already has an SPD installed at the main DB, the autogate circuit can be inspected to determine whether the existing arrangement provides suitable protection or whether additional protection should be considered. This is particularly useful when the autogate is located some distance from the main DB or has a separate electrical supply. The condition of the autogate wiring should also be checked because damaged, exposed or poorly connected wiring can create other electrical problems. Good surge protection cannot replace proper electrical wiring and maintenance.

Can an SPD Protect Against Lightning?

An SPD can help reduce the effects of transient voltage surges, but it is important to understand that an SPD does not make your property completely lightning-proof. A direct lightning strike can involve extremely large amounts of energy and may cause serious damage even when surge protection has been installed. Lightning protection and surge protection are related but are not exactly the same thing. A complete lightning protection system may include external components such as air terminals, down conductors and earth electrodes, while an SPD is installed within the electrical system to help limit transient overvoltage. The level of protection required depends on the building, electrical installation and the type of risk involved.

Lightning Arrestor and SPD

The terms lightning arrestor and SPD are sometimes used together, but they can refer to different types of protection depending on the application. A lightning protection system is designed to provide a controlled path for lightning current, while an SPD is intended to protect electrical systems and connected equipment from transient overvoltage. For a typical residential property, the first step is to look at the existing DB, earthing and electrical installation and determine what type of surge protection is suitable. For larger buildings or properties with specific lightning protection requirements, a more complete lightning protection system may be required.

Signs You May Need Surge Protection

If your property has experienced repeated electrical equipment failures after thunderstorms, it may be worth having the electrical system inspected. This can include an autogate control board failing after lightning, CCTV equipment suddenly stopping, routers or networking equipment being damaged, LED lights failing, electronic appliances developing faults or other unusual electrical problems following a storm. These symptoms do not automatically prove that a surge was responsible, because equipment can fail for many different reasons. However, checking the DB, earthing, wiring and existing protection can help identify whether there is a potential electrical protection issue. An old DB without surge protection may also be worth reviewing, especially if the property contains many sensitive electronic devices.

SPD Replacement and DB Inspection

An SPD is not necessarily a device that can be installed once and forgotten. Many SPDs have a visual status indicator that shows whether the protection component is still operational. After a significant surge, an SPD may reach the end of its service life and require replacement. During a DB inspection, the electrician can check the condition of the SPD together with the main switch, RCCB, MCBs, wiring and other components inside the distribution board. If the existing SPD is damaged, unsuitable or no longer providing protection, replacement may be recommended. If the DB itself has other problems, those should also be identified before installing new protection.

SPD Installation in KL & Selangor

Tronica Engineering provides SPD installation, SPD replacement, DB inspection, earthing checks and electrical repair services in KL, Selangor and the Klang Valley. We can inspect the existing electrical installation and explain the condition of your DB before recommending the necessary work. If your main concern is an autogate that has stopped working after a thunderstorm, we can also check the electrical supply and wiring to the autogate together with the control board and other related components. The aim is not simply to replace a damaged part, but to identify whether there may be an underlying electrical problem that could cause the same issue again.

Protect Your DB and Autogate

A voltage surge can happen in a fraction of a second, but the damage to electronic equipment can be expensive. A properly selected and installed Surge Protective Device (SPD) can provide an additional layer of protection for your electrical installation and sensitive equipment. For homes and businesses with automatic gates, surge protection can also be considered as part of protecting the autogate’s electronic control system. SPD protection is not a guarantee against every type of lightning damage, but it can help reduce the risk from transient electrical surges when it is correctly installed as part of a suitable electrical protection system.
