Professional Earthing System Installation
The earthing wire, also known as the grounding wire, is a conductor used to direct electric current safely into the ground. When electrical equipment leaks electricity, the current flows through the earthing wire into the earth. The symbol for earthing is E (Earth). In simple terms, the earthing wire is a form of electrical protection. It quickly directs leakage or induced current into the ground so that the equipment casing is no longer live, keeping both people and devices safe. For example, household electrical appliances with poor insulation or used in humid environments may develop static electricity on their metal casing, which in severe cases can cause electric shock. To prevent such accidents, a wire can be connected to the metal casing of the appliance, with the other end connected to the ground. If a leakage occurs, the earthing wire will discharge the static electricity safely into the earth.
What Are the Functions of an Earthing System?
Protect Personal Safety
When electrical equipment leaks electricity, the earthing system quickly directs the leakage current into the ground, preventing electric shock and reducing the risk of accidents.
Prevent Equipment Damage
Earthing helps release overvoltage caused by induction or lightning strikes, preventing electronic components from being damaged or destroyed, and extending the lifespan of the equipment.
Reduce Fire Hazards
Leakage current, electrical arcs, or overcurrent without proper earthing can lead to electrical fires. An earthing system helps reduce the risk of such fires.
Improve System Stability
Proper earthing helps stabilize voltage, enhances the performance of the electrical system, and reduces electromagnetic interference and signal abnormalities.
Ensure Proper Functioning of Protection Devices
Devices like RCCBs (Residual Current Circuit Breakers) and SPDs (Surge Protection Devices) rely on proper earthing to quickly cut off power or discharge excess current during faults or lightning strikes.
Most Homes Don't Pass the Earthing Test. Does Yours?
Unfortunately, many older homes built in the 1960s and 1970s were constructed without proper earthing systems. As a result, when you touch certain home appliances, you may feel a mild electric shock or tingling sensation. This usually happens because stray current is leaking onto the metal parts of the appliance and without a proper earthing path, your body becomes part of the circuit. Over time, this can be dangerous and increases the risk of serious electric shock or fire.
Even some newly built homes today do not meet the required earth resistance standards. In many cases, the resistance readings are far higher than what is considered safe. This can happen due to poor installation practices, inadequate soil testing or the use of substandard materials. High earth resistance means that fault current cannot flow effectively to the ground which delays or prevents safety devices like RCCBs from tripping during a fault. As a result, homeowners may unknowingly face serious electrical hazards despite living in a brand-new property.
Most homeowners don’t bother with yearly electrical maintenance. They just wait until something big happens, like a few appliances get fried or always kena lightning. Only then they start looking for an electrician.
Don't Ignore Tingling From Your Water Heater
We regularly receive enquiries from homeowners who report feeling a tingling sensation or suspected electrical voltage on their water heater casing (seemed to have current on the outer casing). If this happens, stop using the appliance and have it inspected immediately. When they used a test pen to touch the water heater cover, the light turned on, indicating the presence of leakage current on the surface. This is a common sign of poor earthing or no proper grounding connection. It can also happen if the RCCB isn’t functioning correctly or isn’t installed at all. While the current might feel mild or harmless, it’s actually a serious safety risk and could lead to electric shock.
According to the latest standards, all water heaters must be protected by an RCCB with a 10mA sensitivity to provide enhanced protection against electric shock. So if your water heater doesn’t have a dedicated RCCB, please contact us. We’ll help you install one properly to ensure your home is safe and compliant with the latest regulations.
Common Problems in Poor Earthing Installations:
- No earth rod installed at all The basic earthing component may be missing or improperly connected, which can result in an inadequate earthing path for the electrical system.
- Earth rod not driven deep enough Shallow installations lead to high resistance and poor performance, especially in dry or rocky soil.
- Earth resistance too high Readings fail to meet safety requirement.
- Loose or corroded earth connections Over time, poor connections weaken the system and may fail during a fault.
- Use of undersized earth cables For example, using 4mm² instead of 10mm² or 16mm² compromises safety.
- Cheap or non-compliant materials used Substandard rods, cables or clamps deteriorate quickly and may not conduct properly.
- No bonding to DB box or key metal parts Without proper bonding, fault current may not flow safely to earth.
- Earthing not connected to SPD or RCCB Without this, surge protection and leakage detection may not function as intended.
- No earth continuity test or resistance reading taken after installation Some installers skip testing entirely, leaving the client unaware of system failure risks.
- Painted or oxidized contact points Poor surface contact causes resistance at joints and weakens earthing
- No maintenance access or inspection chamber The rod is buried without access, making future inspection or repairs difficult.
Why Does Your DB Box Trip During Thunderstorms?
If your DB (Distribution Board) trips during a thunderstorm or heavy rain, it’s a sign that something isn’t right with your electrical system.
Poor Earthing System
During thunderstorms, a proper earthing system plays a crucial role in protecting your home. If your house has no earth rod, high earth resistance, or loose or corroded earth connections, lightning or leakage current may not be safely discharged into the ground. As a result, your RCCB may trip, or your DB may shut off suddenly to prevent further danger. In some cases, the problem may also be caused by an overly sensitive ELCB, which can cut off the power even when there’s only a small surge or minor leakage in the system.
Frequent nuisance tripping is really inconvenient. Imagine going outstation for 1–2 weeks, thinking everything’s fine at home. But your RCCB trips, and your fridge full of seafood and fresh meat shuts off without you knowing. By the time you come back, everything’s spoiled, smells like a dead body, and sometimes you even see worms crawling inside.
And not just the fridge. When the power trips, your CCTV also goes offline. You can’t view the live feed, and if you’ve got valuable or luxury items at home, it’s really stressful. You’ll be outstation, can’t check anything, and end up losing sleep worrying whether your home is safe. Anyone ever had this experience?
We’ve seen many people change their RCCB from 100mA to 300mA just because it trips frequently. While it may seem to solve the problem by making the system less sensitive, this is not the correct solution. It might work for now, but it’s only a short-term fix. In the long run, it could lead to bigger issues, and you may end up spending more on repairs or damage caused by undetected faults or leakage currents.

Pricing Structure & Options
Our pricing is based on sets of 10 earth rods per installation. After installing the first set, we perform an earth resistance test.
- If the resistance reading is within a safe range, the installation is complete.
- If the result is too high, you have the option to proceed with an additional set, depending on the site conditions.
We offer three specification levels to suit different budgets and project requirements, with prices starting from RM 3700 per installation set:
- The Normal quality spec is ideal for basic residential use where standard performance is sufficient.
- The Medium quality spec offers a balanced option, combining reliable performance with reasonable cost.
- The High quality spec is recommended for long-term durability, harsh environments or projects that demand the best possible grounding performance.
Installation Process of an Earthing System
Here’s how a typical earthing system installation is carried out:
- Site Survey & Assessment
We begin with a site visit to measure the existing earth resistance value, assess soil conditions, confirm the location of the earth pit chamber, and determine the distance between the DB box and the chamber. - Driving Earth Rods & Initial Reading
We start by installing 2–3 copper earth rods in the selected area. After each rod is driven into the ground, we use an earth resistance meter to take a reading.- In most locations, the 3rd rod is the limit due to hard soil or underground obstructions.
- However, in softer soil areas, we may be able to drive in 5–6 rods without issue.
- Installing Additional Earth Pit Chamber (if needed)
If the first chamber reaches its capacity (typically around 6 rods), we identify another spot nearby to install a second earth pit chamber. - Linking the Chambers
We connect the two chambers using jumper wires, ensuring a complete and continuous path for fault current dissipation. - Connecting to the DB Box
Finally, we connect the earth rod system to the DB box using a 10mm or 16mm earthing cable, depending on your system’s requirements.
Please note: The soil condition plays a major role in achieving the desired earth resistance, and this factor is beyond our control. Therefore, if the first set does not meet the required resistance, additional sets may be required based on actual site conditions.
