Power Socket & Switch Installation and Repair
Power sockets and switches are among the most frequently used electrical points in every home, office, shop and commercial property. We use them every day for televisions, refrigerators, washing machines, computers, kitchen appliances, air conditioners, ceiling fans, lights and many other electrical equipment. Because they are used so often, sockets and switches can become worn, loose or damaged over time. A socket may stop working, become hot, produce a burning smell or show signs of sparking. A switch may become loose, difficult to operate or fail to turn a light or appliance on and off.
We provide power socket and switch installation, repair, replacement and troubleshooting in KL and Selangor. We handle both simple fitting replacements and electrical problems where the socket or switch is connected to older or modified wiring. In many cases, the visible socket is not the actual cause of the problem. The wiring behind the socket, the connections between several sockets or the condition of the electrical circuit may need to be checked. This is especially important in older homes where the wiring has been in use for 30, 40 or even 50 years.
Power Points Installation, Repair & Replacement
A power socket may look like a simple fitting, but there are electrical connections behind it that need to be in good condition. With years of regular use, sockets can become loose, cracked, damaged or worn. The plug may no longer fit properly, or the socket may move when the plug is inserted or removed. Some sockets may work intermittently, while others may stop supplying power completely. We can inspect the socket and determine whether the problem is with the socket itself, the wiring connection or the circuit supplying the electrical point.
We install new power sockets and replace old, damaged and faulty sockets for homes and offices. This includes replacing loose sockets, burnt sockets, cracked socket plates and sockets that are no longer working properly. If a socket has black marks, melted plastic or a burnt smell, we recommend checking the wiring and terminals as well instead of simply changing the faceplate. Excessive heat can damage both the socket and the wiring connection behind it. Replacing the visible fitting without checking the cause may leave the same problem in the electrical point.
Many homeowners also need additional power sockets because the original number of electrical points is no longer enough. Older houses were generally designed for a much lower number of electrical appliances. Today, one room may have a television, computer, phone chargers, printer, fan and other equipment operating at the same time. In the kitchen, the electrical demand can be even higher because of kettles, microwaves, refrigerators, ovens and other appliances. Adding more sockets can be useful, but the existing circuit should be checked first. Simply extending from the nearest socket is not always the right solution, particularly in an older installation.
We also replace sockets that have become difficult to use. If the plug keeps falling out, the socket feels loose or the fitting has become damaged, it should be checked. A socket that moves or has a poor connection can place stress on the electrical terminals and wiring. We inspect the condition of the fitting and the connection behind it before carrying out the necessary repair or replacement.
For new socket installation, we also consider what the socket will be used for. A normal socket for a television or computer has different considerations from a point intended for a higher-power appliance. The existing circuit, wiring and protective devices should be suitable for the intended use. Proper planning is particularly important when several new sockets are being added to an existing house.
Faulty Switches & Electrical Point Problems
Electrical switches are used constantly for lights, ceiling fans, exhaust fans and other fixed electrical equipment. After years of use, a switch can become worn, loose or faulty. Some switches may work only occasionally, while others may stop working completely. You may also notice a switch becoming unusually warm, making a buzzing or crackling sound, or producing a burning smell. These are signs that the electrical point should be checked rather than continuing to use it normally.
We provide switch installation, repair and replacement for homes and offices. This includes single switches, multiple switches and combination switch plates. If a switch does not turn the light or fan on and off, we check whether the switch itself is faulty or whether the problem is somewhere else in the circuit. A light that does not turn on, for example, may have a faulty switch, loose wiring, a problem with the light fitting or another electrical fault. Replacing the switch without checking the circuit may not solve the problem.
Some switch problems are obvious. The switch may be cracked, broken, loose or physically damaged. Other problems are less visible. A switch may operate normally but have a loose connection behind it. A poor connection can generate heat and eventually damage the switch or wiring. If you notice a burning smell, black marks, melting or repeated sparking around a switch, stop using the point and have it inspected.
Older houses can also have switches that have been modified several times. Previous owners may have added lights, fans or other electrical points by extending existing wiring. As a result, the wiring behind the switch may not be the same as the original installation. We check the actual wiring arrangement when troubleshooting rather than assuming that every switch has been installed in the same way.
We also replace old switches when the fittings have become worn after many years of use. However, changing the switch should not be treated as the complete solution if there is a wiring problem behind it. The condition of the connection, cable and electrical point should be considered at the same time. This helps identify whether the repair is simply a switch replacement or whether additional electrical work is required.
We have seen many homeowners use a power extension lead to share one socket between appliances such as a washing machine and oven. When high-power appliances are connected through the same extension or socket, the plug, socket and wiring can become overheated, especially when the appliances are operating for long periods. In some cases, the 13A 3-pin plug becomes so hot that it melts and gets stuck inside the power socket. The homeowner cannot unplug it and calls us to inspect the problem. When this happens, do not force the plug out, as pulling or twisting a melted plug can cause further damage to the socket or wiring. We check the plug, socket, terminals and wiring to find out why the overheating occurred, then replace the damaged components and recommend a more suitable electrical arrangement where necessary.
Common Wiring Problems in Older Homes
Power socket problems in older homes are often related to the wiring rather than the socket itself. Some houses have electrical wiring that has been in use for 30 to 50 years. During this time, the electrical requirements of the household may have changed significantly. More appliances have been added, additional sockets may have been installed and previous electrical work may have modified the original circuit. A system that was originally designed for a much smaller electrical load may now be supplying many more appliances.
One common problem is having too many power sockets looped together. Over the years, an additional socket may have been connected from an existing socket, and another socket may then have been extended from that point. This creates a chain of sockets connected to the same circuit. Having multiple sockets on one circuit is not automatically a fault, but problems can arise when the circuit is heavily loaded or when the wiring and connections are old. If many appliances are being used at the same time, the condition and capacity of the existing circuit become important.
Another problem found in older properties is thin or undersized wiring. Electrical wiring should be suitable for the circuit and the expected load. Older homes may have wiring that was installed when people used fewer electrical appliances. Modern households can have refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners, computers, microwave ovens, kettles and many other appliances operating throughout the day. If old wiring is being used for a much greater electrical demand, the circuit should be inspected to determine whether the wiring and connections are suitable.
The age of the wiring itself is another consideration. Wiring that has been used for 30, 40 or 50 years may have experienced years of heat, moisture, movement, previous repairs or modifications. The insulation and connections may have deteriorated depending on the condition and environment. This does not mean every old cable must automatically be replaced, but older installations should be assessed when there are repeated electrical problems, overheating, tripping or other warning signs.
We also come across electrical points where the neutral and earth connections have been tapped from nearby lighting points. This can happen when someone has added a power socket and used the nearest available wiring because it was convenient and can save cost. A lighting point is not automatically a suitable source for a power socket circuit. The actual arrangement needs to be checked to determine how the socket has been connected and whether the supply, neutral and protective earth are properly arranged.
Previous electrical modifications can sometimes be hidden inside walls, ceilings, junction boxes or electrical fittings. From the outside, the socket may look perfectly normal. Behind the faceplate, however, there may be old cables, multiple connections or wiring that has been extended several times. This is why replacing an old socket without checking the wiring may not address the underlying problem.
When adding new sockets to an older property, we therefore recommend checking the existing circuit first. If many sockets are already looped together, the wiring is thin or the installation has been modified several times, adding another socket may not be the best solution. Depending on the condition of the installation, the appropriate solution may involve correcting the wiring arrangement, improving the circuit or carrying out rewiring work.
Troubleshooting Power Socket & Switch Problems
When a power socket or switch stops working, the first step is to identify the actual fault. A socket with no power may be caused by the socket itself, a loose connection, a problem with another socket in the same circuit, a tripped protective device or a wiring fault. Similarly, a faulty switch may be caused by the switch, wiring, light fitting, fan or another part of the circuit. Proper troubleshooting helps determine what is actually causing the problem before replacing components.
We check common symptoms such as no power, intermittent power, loose sockets, burnt sockets, overheating, sparking, buzzing, faulty switches and electrical points that stop working after a particular appliance is connected. Where necessary, electrical testing can be carried out to check the supply and connections. The surrounding wiring may also need to be inspected, particularly when the electrical installation is old or has been modified.
If an MCB or RCCB trips, repeatedly resetting it is not a proper way to solve the problem. The reason for the trip should be investigated. It could be related to an overloaded circuit, a faulty appliance, leakage or another electrical problem. The affected circuit and connected equipment may need to be checked to determine the cause.
One situation we often encounter in older homes is when one socket works but another socket further along the same circuit does not. If the sockets have been looped together, a loose or damaged connection at one point can affect the sockets after it. In this situation, checking only the socket that has no power may not be enough. The connections at the preceding socket and the circuit arrangement may also need to be inspected.
Burnt sockets are another problem that should not be ignored. If a socket has become black, melted or smells burnt, the cause of the excessive heat needs to be considered. A loose terminal connection can create resistance and heat, while an overloaded or unsuitable circuit can also contribute to overheating. The socket, terminals and wiring should be checked before installing a replacement.
Intermittent electrical faults can be particularly difficult because the socket or switch may work normally when checked. If the problem comes and goes, the cause may be a loose connection, deteriorated fitting, wiring problem or another issue within the circuit. Describing exactly when the fault happens can help during troubleshooting, especially if the problem occurs only when a particular appliance is being used.
For older houses, troubleshooting may reveal that the problem is bigger than one faulty socket. If there are multiple old sockets, excessive looping, thin wiring or unusual connections between lighting and power circuits, the overall wiring arrangement may need to be assessed. We can explain what we find and what work is required before proceeding with the repair.
