Shah Alam Electrician – Why Does the Power Keep Tripping When It Rains?

08/10/2026

When the weather starts getting bad, some homeowners may notice that their electricity also starts acting up. The power may suddenly trip, the lights may go off, the autogate may stop working, or some electrical appliances may suddenly lose power.

This happened to Mr Salleh, a homeowner in Shah Alam. At first, he thought it was just a small electrical problem. Whenever there was heavy rain or a thunderstorm, the electricity at home would trip. After switching the breaker back on, everything seemed to work normally again. But after some time, it started happening more often. Mr Salleh became worried because he sometimes had to leave the house for work or travel. If the power tripped while nobody was home, he might not know about it until he came back.

What Can Cause Electrical Trips During Rain?

Mr Salleh contacted Tronica Engineering, and our team came to inspect the electrical system at his house. Instead of simply replacing the MCB or RCCB, we first checked the possible cause of the problem. The inspection included the DB box, main switch, MCB, RCCB, wiring, electrical connections, earthing system and other areas that could be related to the issue.

For electrical problems that happen during rain, the outdoor electrical points are also important. Water and moisture can sometimes affect outdoor lights, wiring, sockets or other electrical equipment that are exposed to the weather. Thunderstorms and sudden voltage changes can also affect electrical appliances. If the earthing and electrical protection system are not in good condition, the house may have a higher chance of experiencing electrical problems.

So, if your electricity only starts tripping when it rains, it is better to find out why instead of simply switching the breaker back on every time.

Checking the DB Box and Earthing System

After checking Mr Salleh’s electrical system, we found that some parts had been in use for many years and needed attention. The DB box could also be improved to better suit the home’s current electrical usage.

Our Tronica Engineering team carried out the necessary work on the DB box. Electrical components that were no longer suitable or had problems were replaced, while the connections and arrangement inside the DB box were checked again.

We also checked the earthing system because proper earthing is an important part of electrical safety. For older homes, the condition of the earthing system may not be the same as when the house was first built. A Surge Protection Device (SPD) can also be considered, especially for homes with many electronic appliances such as TVs, refrigerators, computers, autogate systems and other electrical equipment.

Don’t Wait Until You Come Home to Find Out the Power Has Tripped

An electrical problem may seem small at first. But if it keeps happening, especially during heavy rain or thunderstorms, it is better to have it checked properly. Imagine leaving your house for a few days and only finding out later that the electricity had been off for a long time. Your refrigerator may have been without power, your autogate may not work, and some appliances may be affected.

That is why it is a good idea to check your electrical system before going on holiday, balik kampung or leaving your house empty for a few days.

If your DB box has tripped several times before, your RCCB keeps going down, your lights flicker, or your autogate suddenly loses power, don’t ignore these signs.
