Malaysia is hot, but we also get plenty of rain and thunderstorms.
On a hot day, we may use the air conditioner for many hours. During heavy rain, more lights and electrical appliances may be running inside the house. When there is a thunderstorm, some homes may also experience a sudden power trip.
Most of the time, we only notice our electrical system when something stops working.
- The power suddenly goes off.
- The aircond stops.
- A kitchen appliance cannot be switched on.
- Or a switch starts giving trouble.
Some problems are small, but if the same problem keeps coming back, it is better to find out what is causing it.
Power Trip at Home or Office
A sudden power trip can be worrying, especially when the whole house becomes dark. You may check the DB box and find that the MCB or RCCB has tripped.
Sometimes the trip may be caused by an appliance. It can also be related to the electrical circuit, wiring or leakage.
If you reset the switch and everything works normally, you can keep an eye on it. But if it trips again, do not keep pushing the switch back up many times. A wireman can check the DB box and electrical points to find the cause.
Aircond Problems on Hot Days
Air conditioners work harder when the weather is hot. Sometimes an aircond works normally at first, but the switch trips after running for some time. In other cases, the aircond may not turn on at all.
The problem may be from the aircond, switch, wiring or the electrical point. If this happens more than once, it is better to have the aircond point and electrical supply checked instead of simply resetting the switch every time.
Loose Socket or Switch
A socket or switch should not move when you use it. If a socket becomes loose, you may notice it when plugging in a phone charger, kettle or other appliance.
Sometimes the problem is only the socket fitting. But a loose connection behind the socket can also cause trouble.
If the socket feels hot, has black marks, gives off a burning smell or makes a buzzing sound, stop using it and get it checked.
When a Power Point Has No Power
Another common problem is a power point that suddenly stops working. You plug in an appliance, but there is no power.
Before assuming the appliance is broken, try another appliance at the same point if it is safe to do so. You can also try the appliance at another working point.
If the appliance works elsewhere but not at that particular point, the socket, switch or wiring may need to be checked. This is also common in kitchens, where we use several appliances every day.
LED Light, Oven or Kitchen Hood Not Working
Not every electrical problem starts at the DB box. Sometimes an LED light suddenly stops working. You replace the light, but the new one still does not work.
There may also be times when the oven, microwave, air fryer or kitchen hood cannot be switched on.
The first thing to check is whether the appliance itself is working and whether the power point has electricity.
If the same electrical point keeps giving problems, it is better to have the switch, power point and wiring checked.
Need More Power Points at Home?
As we buy more appliances, we may find that the existing power points are not enough. A family may need an extra point for a water filter, refrigerator, work computer, TV, kitchen appliance or other equipment.
During a renovation, you may also want to add new lighting points, switches or power points. Before adding a new point, the existing wiring and circuit should be checked to make sure the new electrical load is suitable.
A proper electrical point should not simply be added anywhere without checking the existing circuit.
Rain, Thunderstorms and Electrical Problems
Heavy rain and thunderstorms are part of our weather in Malaysia.
During a storm, lightning can cause electrical surges and may affect electrical equipment. However, not every power trip during rain is caused by lightning.
If you notice that your electrical problems happen repeatedly during heavy rain or thunderstorms, it is worth having the electrical system checked.
It is also a good habit to unplug electrical appliances that you are not using during a severe storm.
When Should You Call an Electrician?
A simple burnt-out LED bulb may be something you can replace yourself. But electrical work involving wiring, the DB box, MCB, RCCB or repeated power trips should be checked by a wireman or electrician.
You should also get help if you notice a burning smell, sparks, a hot switch or socket, buzzing sounds or damaged wiring.
Do not keep using an electrical point just because it still works. If something looks or feels unusual, it is better to check it early.
