Have you ever turned on your air conditioner and everything seems fine, but after using it for a while, the electricity suddenly trips? This happened to Mr Haikal in Kajang. His living room aircond could be switched on normally, but after running for some time, the power would suddenly go off.
When he checked the DB box, the aircond switch had gone down. He could switch it back on and use the aircond again, but after some time, the same problem happened.
At first, Mr Haikal thought the aircond itself was getting old and might be faulty. He was already thinking about whether he should replace the unit with a new one.
Is the Aircond Faulty or Is It an Electrical Problem?
Before spending money on a new aircond, Mr Haikal decided to have the problem checked first.
This is important because an aircond that keeps tripping does not always mean the aircond unit is faulty. The problem can also come from the electrical side that supplies power to the unit.
For example, the problem could be related to the aircond switch, wiring, cable connection, MCB, RCCB or another part of the electrical circuit.
If you immediately assume the aircond is damaged and buy a new unit, you may end up spending a lot of money when the actual problem is only with the electrical supply.
Checking the DB Box and Aircond Circuit
Mr Haikal contacted Tronica Engineering to inspect the problem. Our team checked the DB box and the circuit connected to the aircond. We also checked the aircond switch, wiring connections and the electrical protection related to the circuit.
After checking the system, we found that the problem was not simply because the aircond was old.
The electrical switch for the aircond was faulty and was causing the circuit to trip after the aircond had been running for some time. This is why checking the electrical side can be useful before deciding to replace an expensive appliance.
Replacing the Faulty Switch Instead of the Aircond
After finding the problem, we replaced the faulty aircond switch with a new suitable switch.
The circuit was then checked again and the aircond was tested. After the repair, the aircond could run normally without the repeated tripping problem. Mr Haikal was relieved because he did not have to rush out and buy a new aircond.
Of course, an older aircond may eventually need servicing or replacement. But when the problem involves electrical tripping, it is a good idea to check the electrical circuit as well.
Why Can an Aircond Cause the Electrical Circuit to Trip?
An air conditioner uses quite a lot of electrical power compared to some other home appliances. Because of this, the condition of the electrical circuit and protection devices is important.
Some possible causes of an aircond tripping problem include:
- Faulty or worn-out aircond switch
- Wiring or cable connection problems
- MCB problem
- RCCB tripping
- Electrical leakage
- Loose electrical connection
- Fault with the aircond unit itself
- Other problems within the electrical circuit
The timing of the trip can also give some clues. For example, if the aircond runs for 20 or 30 minutes before the circuit trips, the cause may be different from an aircond that trips immediately after being switched on. That is why repeatedly turning the switch back on without checking the cause is not a good long-term solution.
Don’t Buy a New Aircond Too Quickly
If your aircond in Kajang keeps tripping, don’t immediately assume that the unit needs to be replaced.
Sometimes, the actual problem may be with the switch, wiring or electrical circuit supplying the aircond. Having the electrical system checked can help determine whether the problem is coming from the aircond or the electrical side.
For Mr Haikal, the problem was much simpler than expected. After the faulty electrical switch was replaced, the aircond could be used normally again. This also saved him from buying a new aircond unnecessarily.
